The movie industry is currently evolving. Today, more and more filmmakers are choosing to release their movies as NFTs. And while the space is still in its early stages, there are definitely signs that NFTs are the future of Hollywood. Join us as we explore the top 10 movie NFTs out there today, and outline the process for how to buy movie NFTs of your own!

How NFTs Are Changing Movies

Before we dive in, it’s important to ask: how do NFTs work for movies? There are several ways:

  • Movies can be a revenue source for filmmakers, since films can be released as NFTs directly.
  • Filmmakers can sell NFTs to fund their movies.
  • They can also sell NFTs representing movies themselves.
  • There’s also the merchandising option, where filmmakers sell merch and other add-ons as NFTs.

If you’re an NFT fan and an avid movie watcher, you probably want to get in on this opportunity as quickly as possible! You also might be wondering: what NFTs are selling the most and how do I get my hands on them?! Below, we’ll examine some of the most prominent movie NFT projects and the platforms where they can be bought.

Top 10 Movie NFTs

Our top 10 movie NFTs will cover all aspects of NFT involvement in film, so fans get to see a diverse selection of movie NFT options.

1. Zero Contact

Kicking off the list is Zero Contact. Starring two-time Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins, the movie is recognized as the first full-length feature film to be released as an NFT.

Launched in 2021, the Zero Contact collection included 2,500 bundles of “exclusive edition” NFTs. The bundles include the feature film itself, a production featurette, and additional movie memorabilia like signed posters and trading cards. After release, the NFTs sold for over $90,000.

Zero Contact NFTs are currently available on OpenSea, the most popular NFT marketplace. However, fans can also get them on Vuele – an NFT movie platform launched by Enderby Entertainment.

2. Spider-Man: No Way Home

In 2021, AMC Theaters announced that it had partnered with Sony Entertainment to release 86,000 exclusive NFTs to fans of the Spider-Man franchise. The NFTs were initially available to AMC customers who ordered tickets for Spider-Man: No Way Home on December 6th, the movie’s opening day.

These were only offered to members of AMC Stubs Premiere, AMC Stubs A-List, and AMC Investor Connect who ordered tickets for the movie in advance. While these NFTs are currently unavailable, they made the list because of how historic the release was – it signaled major mainstream appeal for NFTs in Hollywood.

3. Pulp Fiction

Pulp Fiction is one of the most iconic cult classics of all time – starring Samuel L. Jackson and John Travolta, this movie is the stuff of legends. And in November 2021, its legendary director Quentin Tarantino offered uncut scenes from the movie as seven NFTs.

Instead of launching the entire movie as an NFT, Tarantino took the merchandising route we mentioned above. His NFTs featured never-before-seen footage from Pulp Fiction, as well as original handwritten scripts and commentary from Tarantino himself.

Like Zero Contact, most of the Pulp Fiction NFTs are currently available on OpenSea

4. No Time to Die

The most recent movie in the James Bond franchise, No Time To Die, marked a milestone – it was also the final appearance of Daniel Craig as 007.

While everyone else was arguing about who will be the next James Bond, the franchise’s developers, MGM Studios, partnered with the VeVe marketplace to launch NFTs commemorating the film.

The NFTs feature some of the most iconic props from the James Bond franchise, including vehicles, posters, gadgets, and more from No Time To Die. They are all exclusively available on VeVe.

5. Dune

Dune was one of the most popular movies released in 2021, featuring a star-studded cast including Timothée Chalamet, Jason Momoa, Rebecca Ferguson, and Zendaya. With so much anticipation, it wasn’t much of a surprise when Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures launched NFTs to commemorate the flick.

However, the Dune collection was eventually canceled after fans were outraged over the studio’s decision to launch the NFTs on the Ethereum blockchain. With this blockchain being noted for its carbon emissions, the drop was eventually canceled and shelved. However, with the sequel to Dune already on the way, a new collection could follow.

6. Deadpool 2

A 2018 sequel to 2016’s original Deadpool movie saw Ryan Reynolds reprise his role as the smart-talking, cuss-flinging antihero. Interestingly, Deadpool 2 was released long before many people knew about Hollywood NFTs or had even begun thinking about how to buy movie NFTs.

At the time, Marvel Entertainment and Sony launched NFTs and distributed them to people who had bought tickets to see the movie in theaters. While the original Deadpool 2 NFTs are no longer available, fans of the superhero can check out other Deadpool-themed NFTs on VeVe and OpenSea!

7. Space Jam: A New Legacy

Centered around NBA icon LeBron James, Space Jam: A New Legacy is the 2020s remake of the original Space Jam movie, which starred Michael Jordan. The film got mixed reviews, although many praised the decision to release Space Jam-themed digital collectibles.

These collectibles were launched as a collaboration between Warner Bros. and Nifty’s – another NFT marketplace. There were 91,000 NFT released in total, and they all featured characters from the new movie, including Bugs Bunny, Tweety, Porky Pig, and LeBron himself.

The NFTs are currently available exclusively on Nifty’s.

8. Godzilla vs. Kong

The latest instalment in the “monsterverse,” Godzilla vs. Kong, brought both classic creatures face to face for an epic showdown. It was the culmination of years’ worth of universe-building, with a franchise that included titles like Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

Just as the NFT mania was starting to grip different industries, Legendary Entertainment decided to release an exclusive collection to celebrate the movie. Designed by Australian illustrator BossLogic, the seven-piece collection was only available for a limited time on the movie’s release date. However, the NFTs can still be viewed on a marketplace called MakersPlace.

9. Stoner Cats

Stoner Cats is an animated series starring Mila Kunis, Ashton Kutcher, Chris Rock, Jane Fonda, and more. The series features cannabis-smoking felines, and each episode runs between five and seven minutes.

Fittingly, the first episode of Stoner Cats was released as a collection of 10,420 NFTs (blaze it). Each one was sold for 0.35 ETH, and the first episode actually sold out in less than an hour.

Stoner Cats episodes are available on the series’ official website.

10. She’s Gotta Have It

In 1986, legendary filmmaker Spike Lee captivated audiences and reinvented sneaker culture with She’s Gotta Have It. Starring as Mars Blackmon, Lee cemented himself as one of the greatest filmmakers ever – and showed off his acting skills as well.

In 2022, Lee partnered with The Visible Project to release Gotta Be Mars – an NFT collection based on his character in the movie. The collection included 3,945 NFTs created out of original movie frames. They were released on the Ethereum blockchain, and are currently available on The Visible Project’s website.

Holders of these NFTs enjoy several benefits, such as voting rights on The Visible Project’s direction, early access to curated capsule collections, and even tickets to physical meetups, including the inaugural Visible Festival, which will be held in NYC in spring ’23.
